Laurence van Cott Niven (urodzony 30 kwietnia 1938 w Los Angeles w Kalifornii) – amerykański pisarz science-fiction.

Ukończył matematykę na Uniwersytecie Washburn w Kansas, w 1962. Niven jest prawnukiem potentata naftowego, Edwarda L. Doheny i swoje pisarstwo traktował zawsze jako hobby, niż zajęcie, z którego musi wyżyć. Niven jest postacią kontrowersyjną. Uczestniczył w antywojennych demonstracjach przeciwko wojnie w Wietnamie, ale za prezydentury Reagana doradzał rządowi federalnemu w sprawie tarczy rakietowej, znany jest też jego udział w SIGMA, organizacji doradczej rządu amerykańskiego, złożonej m.in. z pisarzy science fiction, mających przewidywać trendy polityczne i społeczne, pomocne np. w walce z terroryzmem. SIGMA ma jednak na koncie mało chwalebne akcje, jak np. (była to ponoć sugestia Nivena) szerzenie plotek wśród hiszpańskojęzycznych Amerykanów, że służba zdrowia zabija pacjentów - celem miało być mniejsze korzystanie ludności pochodzenia latynoskiego ze służby zdrowia dotowanej przez rząd federalny.

Debiutował w 1964 utworem "The Coldest Place". W 1967 otrzymał nagrodę Hugo za opowiadanie "Gwiazda neutronowa". Jego najbardziej znaną książką jest Pierścień (tytuł oryginalny Ringworld, 1970). Książka ta otrzymała Nagrody Hugo, Locusa oraz Nebuli. Inne nagrodzone opowiadania to "Dziurawiec" i "Pogranicze Sol".

Poza powieściami i opowiadaniami, Niven napisał również scenariusze do seriali telewizyjnych, między innymi do Star Trek: The Animated Series.

Niven wymyślił swoją własna historię przyszłości, w której osadził zdecydowana większość swoich utworów fantastycznonaukowych.
