Henry James urodził się w Nowym Jorku. W 1865 zaczął pisać recenzje i opowiadania dla czasopism amerykańskich. W 1875 osiadł w Paryżu, a następnie w Londynie, gdzie cieszył się dużą popularnością w społeczeństwie. W 1915 roku otrzymał obywatelstwo brytyjskie. Był niezwykle płodnym autorem powieści, opowiadań i listów.

Z prawie 40 filmami opartymi na jego powieściach, ostatnio Złota miska (2001), Amerykanin (1998) i Skrzydła gołębicy (1997), wraz z Charlesem Dickensem stoi na czele listy światowych osiągnięć telewizyjnych i kinowych .
