James Van Pelt – specjalizuje się w pisaniu opowiadań, których opublikował blisko sto od swojego debiutu na początku lat 90. Z zawodu nauczyciel angielskiego wykorzystuje często fantastykę jako sposób na naukę tego języka.

Wydał dwa zbiory opowiadań Strangers and Beggars (2002) i The Last of the O-Forms and Other Stories (2005), w przygotowaniu trzeci The Radio Magician oraz książkę Summer of the Apolcalypse (2006).

W pierwszej i jedynej jak dotąd powieści Van Pelta, klasycznej historii drogi, traktującej o poszukiwaniu nadziei w samym sercu apokalipsy, nastoletni bohater przemierza Amerykę spustoszoną działaniem tajemniczego wirusa. Sześć dekad później pokonuje tę samą drogę, obserwując pozostałości dawnego świata. Van Pelt opublikował dotąd bodaj tylko jedno opowiadanie po polsku, „Kiedyś byli Monarchami”, NF 8/2005. Przewrotny tekst „Ostatnia z form P”, rozpoczynający niniejszą antologię i nominowany do Nebuli w roku 2004, jest w pewnym stopniu bliski klimatowi powieściowego debiutu autora. Wirus zniszczył możliwości reprodukcyjne ludzi i zwierząt, do tego stopnia, że rodzą się już tylko spotworniali mutanci.
