Edgar Rice Burroughs (ur. 1 września 1875 w Chicago, zm. 19 marca 1950 w Los Angeles) – amerykański pisarz, twórca cykli książek o przygodach Tarzana wśród małp, Johna Cartera na Marsie i innych.

Burroughs odebrał dość staranne wykształcenie, próbował tez zaciągnąć się do kawalerii USA, ale został odrzucony z powodu wady serca. Imał się różnych nisko płatnych zajęć, by utrzymać swoja żonę i dzieci. Wreszcie, pracując w hurtowni, zaczął pisać swoje opowiadania przygodowe i fantastyczne do licznych magazynów pulpowych. W 1912 opublikował pierwszy tekst o Tarzanie, który przyniósł mu największą sławę.

Często przenosił akcje swoich przygodowych utworów na inne planety - Marsa bądź Wenus. Barsoom to nazwa popularnego cyklu o Johnie Carterze, burroughsowska nazwa Marsa.
