Octavia Estelle Butler (1947-2006) amerykańska pisarka science fiction i fantasy. Laureatka nagród Hugo i Nebula. Dorastała w domu, gdzie lubiano science fiction, w dzieciństwie zaczytywała się magazynami SF i fantasy, by - jak to później powiedziała - uciec od nudy. Ukończyła Uniwersytet Kalifornijski, brała tez udział w warsztatach literackich, w tym Clarion, zaproszona tam została przez Harlana Ellisona. Tam też poznała czarnoskórego pisarza SF, Samuela Delany'ego. Najbardziej znana z dylogii antytopijnej Parable of the Sower (planowała jeszcze trzeci tom) i trylogii Xenogenesis.
