11 czerwca 2005 roku został odznaczony tytułem Oficer Orderu Imperium Brytyjskiego (OBE) za swoje zasługi dla literatury. W 2007 roku odwiedził Polskę, był gościem Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Fantastyki w Nidzicy.
