Christopher Barzak dorastał na prowincji w Ohio, studiował w podupadającym poprzemysłowym mieście w Ohio, a następnie mieszkał w nadmorskim miasteczku w południowej Kalifornii, stolicy stanu Michigan, oraz na przedmieściach Tokio w Japonii, gdzie uczył angielskiego w wiejskich gimnazjach i szkołach podstawowych. Jego opowiadania ukazywały się w wielu publikacjach, między innymi na Nerve.com, w magazynach The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, Strange Horizons, Salon Fantastique, Interfictions, Realms of Fantasy i Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet.
Jego debiutancka powieść, „One for Sorrow”, została wydana przez Bantam Books jesienią 2007 roku.
Obecnie mieszka w Youngstown w stanie Ohio, gdzie wykłada pisanie na Uniwersytecie Stanowym w Youngstown.
