Jack Vance, właściwie John Holbrook Vance (ur. 28 sierpnia 1916) - amerykański pisarz, autor powieści fantasy i science fiction. Jeden z nestorów i ojców amerykańskiej fantastyki naukowej i sci fi. Na utworach Vance'a wychowały się trzy pokolenia twórców i wciąż bywa inspiracją. Najbardziej znany jest z cyklu o Umierającej Ziemi. Dwaj najsłynniejsi selekcjonerzy antologii i zarazem wzięci autorzy - Gardner Dozois i George R. R. Martin zredagowali dla Vance'a antologię hołd Pieśni Umierającej Ziemi, gdzie udział wzięli najlepsi amerykańscy i brytyjscy autorzy fantasy kilku pokoleń. Jego niezaprzeczalny wpływ na rozwój fantastyki bywa zwykle niedoceniany, a to za sprawą bardzo skromnego charakteru Vance'a - nie udziela się na konwentach, nie bywa na galach. "New York Times Magazine" napisał o pisarzu, że jest to jeden z najbardziej charakterystycznych i niedocenianych głosów w literaturze amerykańskiej.

Jack Vance bardzo wcześnie musiał zarabiać na swoje utrzymanie, imał się różnych zawodów, jednocześnie kształcąc się na Berkeley University. W czasie wojny pracował w stoczni i pływał w marynarce wojennej. Pokochał morze, a żeglarstwo stało się jedną z jego pasji. Drugą był jazz - Vance grywa na kilku instrumentach. Razem ze swoimi przyjaciółmi - Frankiem Herbertem i Poulem Andersonem zbudowali łódź, na której spędzali wiele czasu pływając w delcie Sacramento.

W czasie rejsów zaczął pisać swoje opowieści fantasy, pełne wyszukanego stylu i zwrotów, co stało się szybko jego znakiem rozpoznawczym. Jego fantastyka, nawet jeśli to SF, pozbawiona jest zwykle technologii, komputerów, robotów. Vance skupiał się na biologii, genetyce, psychologii, postrzeganiu pozazmysłowym. Nie ma też u Vance'a wielkiej batalistyki, może poza paroma opowiadaniami i serią Lyonesse.

Grupa wielbicieli twórczości Vance'a, licząca blisko 300 wolontariuszy, rozpoczęła w 1999 roku projekt Vance Integral Edition, którego celem jest wydanie wszystkich utworów pisarza w jednolitej luksusowej edycji. Do tej pory ukazało się 45 tomów.

Używał pseudonimów: Ellery Queen, John Holbrook Vance, Alan Wade, Peter Held, John Van See, John Holbrook.
