Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (ur. 22 maja 1859 w Edynburgu, zm. 7 lipca 1930 w Crowborough) – szkocki pisarz, wolnomularz, spirytysta, czołowy przedstawiciel nurtu powieści detektywistycznych, w których głównym bohaterem jest Sherlock Holmes.

Doyle pochodził z ubogiej arystokratycznej rodziny. Jego ojciec, alkoholik i narkoman, znęcał się nad dziećmi i żoną. Matka Arthura dorabiała jako praczka, by wyżywić rodzinę.

Ukończył studia medyczne w Edynburgu i do roku 1890 prowadził praktykę lekarską. Później zajął się wyłącznie pisarstwem. Oprócz utworów kryminalnych pisał również powieści historyczne, fantastyczno-naukowe, sensacyjne i książki niebeletrystyczne. Oprócz pisarstwa, zajmował się również spirytyzmem (patrz niżej) oraz badaniem historii starożytnych Greków.

Do jego najważniejszych dzieł należą: Pies Baskerville'ów, Studium w szkarłacie oraz wielokrotnie ekranizowana powieść Zaginiony świat, w której wykreował postać ekscentrycznego naukowca George'a Challengera. Na jego dorobek składają się także próby poetyckie oraz kilka opowieści grozy i strachu, utrzymanych w stylistyce i ortografii XIX-wiecznych romansów gotyckich, prozy Edgara Allana Poego czy Ambrose Bierce'a.

Był uczestnikiem III wojny burskiej, podobnie jak jeden z jego bohaterów - Doktor John Watson. Z tego względu wielu czytelników upatruje w Watsonie alter ego autora.

Zajmował się spirytyzmem, którego był gorącym entuzjastą przez większość życia. To z tego powodu utracił przyjaźń z Harry Houdinim, który zajmował się demaskowaniem spirytystów. Doyle sądził, że sam Houdini jest potężnym medium spirytystycznym, uważając wiele jego sztuczek za przejawy działania sił paranormalnych, a jego demaskatorska działalność jest po prostu pozbywaniem się konkurencji (zobacz tekst: "Na skraju nieznanego Doyle'a", opublikowany po śmierci Houdiniego, w 1931 roku). Sprawa ta uczyniła z tych dwóch niegdysiejszych przyjaciół publicznych wrogów.

Do zainteresowania spirytyzmem Doyle'a skłoniła osobista tragedia. Podczas I wojny światowej stracił syna, brata, szwagra i siostrzeńca. Zrozpaczony, zaczął chodzić z żoną na seanse spirytystyczne w nadziei, że będzie mógł porozmawiać ze zmarłym synem.

Jednocześnie, Conan Doyle miał duży wkład w rozwój literatury spirytystycznej - jest m.in. autorem dwutomowego dzieła The History of Spiritualism (1926) i autorem przekładu na język angielski francuskiego dzieła Léona Denis Le mystère de Jeanne d'Arc (angielski tytuł: The Mystery of Joan d'Arc).

Arthur Conan Doyle jest bohaterem literackim i filmowym. Jako bohater literacki występuje w powieściach Lista siedmiorga, Sześcioro mesjaszy Marka Frosta, Arthur i George Juliana Barnesa oraz w serii Kroniki Imaginarium Geographica Jamesa Owena. Postać Conan Doyle'a występuje także w miniserialu Sherlock Holmes: Mroczne początki.

Z postacią Arthura Conan Doyle'a i jego Sherlocka Holmesa jest związane pojęcie Fan i Fandom. Miłośnicy powieści detektywistycznych Doyle'a, z Holmesem i Watsonem w rolach głównych tworzyli kluby czytelnicze, a w chwili, gdy pisarz, znudzony pisaniem o słynnym detektywie uśmiercił go w jednym z opowiadań () - fani wyszli na ulice, głośno protestując przeciw śmierci Holmesa. Doyle ugiął się przed ich żądaniami i cudownie wskrzesił Sherlocka w następnym opowiadaniu (). Miłośnicy Sherlocka Holmesa byli niewątpliwie pierwszym fandomem czytelniczym.
